Zhu Meihua (born 24 February 1953) was a 21-year-old woman who disappeared in Xishuangbanna Village, located in China's Yunnan Province. Meihua went missing after leaving her dormitory to go to the bathroom after waking up in severe pain. Meihua was one of the many Sent-down youth brought about by the Down to the Countryside Movement.
Case[]
On 2 April 1974, Meihua woke up in the dormitory reserved for the Sent-down youth, suffering from unbearable abdominal pain so severe that she couldn't fall back to sleep. Eventually, Meihua couldn't bear the pain anymore and left the dormitory, heading for the nearest public restroom.
924 personnel were involved in the search efforts, with the majority being military personnel from Kunming. The search party combed through the rainforests all the way down to the border with Myanmar, but all anyone found was a pair of black cloth shoes that Meihua was wearing, recovered 25 meters southwest of the toilets.
Chinese authorities believed foul play to be involved with two separate suspects arrested and tortured into making false confessions. They were eventually released after their coerced confessions were proven to be inaccurate.
