Zachary "Zach" Tanner Blom was a teenage boy who went missing along with his sister, father and family friend after the family friend crashed his Piper Cherokee into Lake Clark while they were en route from Port Alsworth to Anchorage, Alaska. Although some parts of the plane, such as a few seats and other debris, were found, the aircraft with the remains of the four missing individuals has not been located.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilot, who didn't have sufficient training for instrument rating, likely played a crucial role in the accident that occurred under reduced visual flight rules. The crash occurred during known icing conditions over the lake. On the day of the accident, the weather was initially suitable for visual flight rules when the pilot departed Port Alsworth. However, reduced visibility, particularly due to low-lying freezing fog over Lake Clark along the expected route, might have played a role in the crash. Despite these factors, the crash was ruled "undetermined" due to a lack of physical evidence.
