Yayun " Lucy" Cheng was a young woman who went missing when she was rock climbing near Princeville, Hawaii, on December 5, 2018.
Case[]
Yayun, from Los Angeles, California, attempted to climb rocks near Queen's Bath around noon when a wave hit her and pulled her out to sea. Witnesses stated she seemed unresponsive in the water and was pulled out to sea.
At the time of this incident, the Queen's Bath trailhead was described by the Kaua'i Fire Department as "very dangerous, particularly in the winter months when surf is high." According to the KFD, a High Surf Warning was in effect for the North Shor of Kaua'i the day before Yayun's disappearance and the trailhead was closed a week before.
The next day after Yayun's disappearance, the KFD conducted a four-day search-and-rescue operation and were aided by lifeguards, the Kaua'i Police Department, and the United States Coast Guard. Yayun's body was not recovered, and she is presumed drowned. She is listed as Kaua'i's seventh drowning victim in 2018.
Although the local reports indicate her disappearance and presumed death was an accident, NamUs states that she "jumped" into the water. As such, it is not clear if the NamUs description is in error or if more unrevealed evidence was uncovered to suggest her death was indeed suicide.
Her case is under investigation by the Kaua'i Police Department. Life's Bridges, a volunteer grief counseling service, has been assisting her family.
Characteristics[]
- Brown hair.
- Brown eyes.

Footnotes[]
- ↑ NamUs states her height is 5'2 - 8'4. This is presumably an error and 5'4 is most likely the maximum meant.
