Disappearance[]

A group of eight people left Igloolik for Hall Beach on the morning of July 23, 1991 in a 24-foot freighter canoe with a 30 HP outboard. The weather was stormy and extremely rainy. Around fifteen miles north of Hall Beach, the canoe filled up with water and capsized after hitting submerged ice.

Forty people and fourteen boats were involved in the search party, but heavy ice made the search difficult. Abraham Oolalak was the only survivor; he had been holding onto ice for 24 hours. He was treated for hypothermia and was released from the nursing station on the same day he was found. The canoe was also located.

Officials ended the search within a week because it was unlikely that any of the missing people were still alive.

Note: Hall Beach has since been renamed to Sanirajak.
