Tanja Afra Maria Groen (Schagen, 23 June 1975) was a young woman who disappeared in the summer of 1993 near Maastricht, The Netherlands. She came from Schagen and was just about to start studying health sciences at Maastricht University. Tanja was never found, nor was her bicycle, which disappeared with her.
Case[]
Tanja was a first year student of health sciences at the University of Maastricht. She had lived on her own in Gronsveld since August 1, 1993. Tanja last had phone contact with her mother on August 31, 1993 around 7:30 or 7:50 pm. Later that night, Tanja attended a party organized by the Student Association Circumflex. The party took place in the Soos of the student association, located on the Herbenusstraat in Maastricht.
Tanja left the party on her bicycle around midnight for her room in Gronsveld. However, she never arrived. On September 1, 1993, her classes began, but also here she did not appear. She was also no longer seen by classmates or fellow residents.
Characteristics[]
Tanja was approximately 1.70 m (5'7 feet) and had long dark hair up to her shoulders. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing blue jeans.
Recent developments[]
In the autumn of 2019, the cold case team of the police in Limburg received information about the location where Tanja Groen's body may have been buried. This information led to a grave in the cemetery of the Catholic Church Heugem, located at De Beente in Maastricht. The cold case team did not provide any further information on the specific content of the information received.
At one of the graves in the cemetery, the investigation team conducted a forensic investigation on January 2, 2020. During this investigation, the tomb was opened and inspected. It is important to note that the investigation is completely separate from the descendants of the deceased man who was buried there. The deceased's family voluntarily cooperated with police. Tanja's body was not found.
