Sequoya Rebecca Vargas was a teenage girl who went missing in Hawaii in 1993. Three men have been convicted for their role in her death, but her body has never been discovered.

Case[]

Sequoya's acquaintance, Matthew Gibbs, confessed to his involvement in her disappearance. Gibbs, Jason McCubbins, and Richard Serrano had raped her after she became unconscious from a drink they had concocted. Sequoya woke up screaming, and in an attempt to silence her, she was placed in the trunk of a vehicle and tossed off a 20-foot cliff. After Sequoya could be heard moaning, they placed her body in the ocean. A trial regarding Sequoya's murder had been arranged, but Josh Curry, Sequoya's ex-boyfriend who had been scheduled to testify, disappeared shortly before the trial. Curry and Vargas continue to be missing persons, but it is not known if their disappearances are connected.

McCubbins received a twenty-year prison sentence for manslaughter and sexual assault, Gibbs was put on probation, and Serrano is required to serve a minimum of fifty years in prison before the eligibility of parole. Gibbs was later incarcerated for unrelated charges.
