Relisha had been residing with her mother, Shamika Young, at a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C., at the time of her disappearance.
While at the shelter, her family became acquainted with a 51-year-old janitor named Khalil Tatum. Tatum had been imprisoned at several points and had a felony record for burglary, larceny, and breaking and entering. Tatum would fraternatize with the shelter residents inappropriately and eventually became friends with Young. This would lead to a relationship where he would buy gifts for Relisha and take her out for recreation, including taking her out overnight to stay with him and his grandmother.
In February 2014, Relisha stopped attending school. However, Young stated that she was under the care of a "Dr. Tatum" and she was having health problems. This led to the school contacting the number provided on the note, but when Tatum did not attend an arranged meeting at the school, a counsellor became concerned and reported her missing in March. On March 19, The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia launched a missing persons probe, by which point Rudd had not been in school for a month.
The last known sighting of Rudd was pulled from CCTV footage at lodgings around Washington, D.C. Tatum and Relisha were seen on camera walking down a hallway at a Holiday Inn Express in Northeast, Washington, D.C. on February 26, and footage from March 1 showed Relisha walking with Tatum to a room in a Days Inn on New York Avenue in Washington, D.C.
Previous age progression
On the same day Relisha was reported missing, Tatum's wife, Andrea, was discovered with a gunshot wound to her head in a motel in Prince George's County, Maryland. CCTV footage showed Tatum and his wife entering the hotel room the night before. On March 31, Tatum's body was found in a shed in Kenilworth Park, Washington, D.C. He allegedly died by suicide from the same gun that killed his wife.
