Melinda "Mindy" Karen Creech was a young teenager who vanished in 1979. For unknown reasons her mother incorrectly told her siblings that she'd been found deceased.

Case[]

Mindy was last seen in Anderson, Indiana on September 5, 1979. According to some sources she ran away from home, something which she had a history of doing. According to other sources she was placed in the Bronnenberg Children's Home, a juvenile detention facility, after she was caught stealing motorcycles with another teenager. Two months later police returned to speak to Mindy in relation to another theft only to discover she was gone.

In 1994 Mindy's mother, Shirley Creech, told Mindy's siblings that a badly decomposed body in either New York or New Jersey had been identified as their missing sister. While they believed her claims, a funeral service was never held for Mindy. Strangely, when Shirley died in 2003 they found documents which stated that Mindy had actually been ruled out as a potential match for the body in question via dental records.

It is unknown why Shirley lied about her daughter's supposed death. It is possible that she might just have been confused as she had suffered from dementia for years leading up in her death. However, according to Mindy's siblings she was also an extremely abusive parent.

Mindy's missing person case was reopened in 2004. Police are tracking down friends of Mindy to see if they have had any contact with her in the years since her disappearance. Mindy's Social Security number has been inactive since 1979. Her case remains unsolved.
