International Missing Persons Wiki

Melissa Brown, also known by the surname Trussell, was a teenage girl who disappeared from Adelaide, South Australia, in May 2000, along with her mother, Rosemary Anne Brown.

In July 2000, Rosemary's body was found in mangroves north of Adelaide. Melissa's body has never been found, but it's suspected she was also murdered.

Case[]

On 3 May 2000, Melissa, her mother Rosemary Anne Brown, and Rosemary's young son were evicted from the Windsor Gardens Caravan Park in Adelaide, South Australia, due to unpaid rent and complaints about youths loitering around their caravan. A resident of the caravan park, Mark Nicholls, invited the family to move into his caravan.

On 7 May, the family were evicted from the caravan park and slept in Mark's caravan at the Garden Island boat ramp. On 8 May, Rosemary arranged for them to move Mark's caravan into the yard of a friend's home in Blair Athol, a suburb of Adelaide. Mark was the last person to see Rosemary and Melissa when they left the caravan on foot to find Rosemary's son at around 2:30 AM on 13 May.

Rosemary's handbag was discovered later that day in Stirling Street, Northfield, a suburb of Adelaide. However, it was not until a public appeal about Melissa and Rosemary's disappearances that the handbag was handed to the police on 23 May.

On 2 July 2000, Rosemary's body was discovered in the mangroves at Garden Island. Melissa has never been found, and is suspected to have been murdered and her remains dumped with those of her mother. However, despite exhaustive searches by divers, Melissa was never recovered. Numerous people, including Mark, have been questioned at length, but there is no firm suspect.

A reward of $200,000 is available for information about the murder of Rosemary Anne Brown, and a $1,000,000 reward is available for information on Melissa's suspected murder and the recovery of her body.
