Mary Ann Ruth Switalski was a teenager who ran away from her Chicago, Illinois home on July 15, 1963. Her latest age progression depicts her at 69.

Background[]

Mary Ann was a good student who had just completed her junior year in high school. She had placed deposits for her senior yearbook and class ring. She worked at a neighborhood store and made extra money babysitting. She had a younger sister.

Case[]

Mary Ann was last seen when she attended a carnival with friends. She was last seen around 10:15 p.m. Two days later, her parents received a letter from Mary Ann saying she was fine, would send her parents some money and that she was having a "strange but educational experience.".

The letter also said that she wasn't sure if she would ever see her parents again and that she wouldn't tell them where she was. The letter was postmarked to a suburb in Chicago where Mary Ann would often go shopping with family.

Her parents were left confused on why she ran away as she had a seemingly happy life and had already made investments into her future. It later came out that Mary Ann had joined a company who sold magazines door-to-door. The company was en-route to California at the time.

The couple who ran the company were questioned and both said they had hired her, but gave conflicting reports on what happened after. The wife said that Mary Ann had left sometime before the questioning but the husband said Mary Ann never left Chicago.
