Mark Steven Scott (born July 26, 1954) was a teenager who disappeared in 1972. He is a confirmed victim of Dean Corll, although his remains have never been found.
Case[]
Mark left his house to hang out with his friends on April 20, 1972, in Houston, Texas. He was never seen again after that day.
Mark's parents received a postcard from him after his disappearance. It stated that he had obtained a job in order to repay a lawyer that had previously aided him when he was charged for holding a weapon.
Dean Corll, nicknamed "The Candy Man," was a Texas serial killer who operated with two accomplices, Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. and David Owen Brooks, in the 1970s. Henley shot Corll to death in self-defense on August 8, 1973, and subsequently confessed to his role in several murders, including Mark's.
Mark was a friend of both Henley and Brooks. Henley stated that he, along with Brooks and Corll, had abducted him, and that Mark was forced to write the letter to his parents, raped, and tortured before being strangled to death the following morning and buried at High Island Beach.
Despite this confession, neither Henley nor Brooks has been charged specifically for Mark's murder. Henley was convicted of 6 other murders and sentenced to 6 consecutive terms of 99 years in prison; he will next be eligible for parole in 2025. Brooks was convicted of one murder and sentenced to life in prison; he died in 2020.
In 1993, the remains of another one of Corll's victims were misidentified as Mark. There were multiple inconsistencies: Henley claimed that Mark was buried at High Island Beach, but this victim was found in the boat shed, Mark's hair was lighter in color, and Mark didn’t have any extracted teeth, while this victim had two extracted molars. However, a DNA test supposedly proved that the remains were Scott's. Despite this, Henley insisted that they had been misidentified, and his claims were substantiated in 2011 with an updated DNA test. The remains were then identified as Steven Sickman.
Corll had at least 28 victims. Mark is the only confirmed victim whose body has not been found, although one of his victims remains unidentified. However, it is speculated that Corll murdered additional people. Norman Prater has been offered as a potential victim, although there is no conclusive evidence linking Prater to Corll.
The area where Mark's remains are believed to be buried has been submerged underwater since Hurricane Ike in 2008. His case is inactive.
