Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Campbell was a young woman who vanished in 1988.
Background[]
At the time of her disappearance, Liz was living with her parents in Lampasas, Texas, although she had thought of moving out for the first time. She also wanted to transfer to Texas A&M University to study marine biology.
Liz was described as an intelligent young woman with high moral standards. However, her mother also states she was very trusting and naive. She reportedly had a good upbringing and generally did what her parents asked.
Case[]
Liz was last seen in Copperas Cove, Texas, on April 25, 1988. That day, she attended classes at the Central Texas College before working at a 7-11 store on Rancier Avenue in Killeen, Texas. Afterwards, she went to her boyfriend's house to study for her final exams as a group. An argument broke out between Liz and her boyfriend, and she said she wanted to go home. He refused to take her, and she set off on foot between 9:30 P.M. and 10:00 P.M.
The most direct route Liz could have taken to get home was down Highway 190. The road was dark, and stretches of it were desolated. She was next seen by another student near the Central Texas College exit at 10:48 P.M. Authorities believe that someone drove her to the college, but no one has ever come forward claiming to have done so. The man offered to give her a ride and subsequently took back to the 7-11 she worked at.
Liz arrived at the 7-11, where she was seen by a clerk shortly after 11:00 P.M. She called her boyfriend using a phone inside the store, but they had another argument. As a result, she tried to call her brother from a pay phone outside the store. Her mother was woken up by the phone ringing around midnight, but it stopped when she got up.
The following day, Liz's parents realised they couldn't find her and attempted to report her missing. The police refused to file the report until 72 hours had passed because she was an adult. As a result, her family spent the next three days searching for her. They found the student who had taken her to the 7-11 through this.
Liz's purse was found over 180 miles away, off Interstate 10 in Ozone, Texas. This became apparent in 1992. It had been handed into the Crockett County Sheriff's office, but there was no record of when this happened or who handed it over, and employees could not recall these details. The maroon purse was in good condition and had seemingly been in the Sheriff's Department property room for years. The sheriff at the time believed it had been turned in between April 1988 and January 1989.
Authorities were unable to find any physical evidence in the purse. Her social security card, driver's licence, military identification card and credit card were all found inside. However, her makeup, hairbrush and keys were all missing.
Liz's boyfriend has been ruled out as a suspect in her disappearance. Police have released a sketch of a possible suspect in her case.
