Laura Lee Asynithe Flink was a young woman who vanished from Aberdeen, Washington in 1969.
Background[]
Laura worked as a waitress, which was her only source of income. She had a 16-month-old son at the time of her disappearance, whom she'd just won custody over. Her ex-husband believed that she was too young to care for a child and wanted a family called the Askeas to adopt him instead. During the custody battle that followed this, the Askeas would end up spending extended periods with the toddler while Laura was at work.
Case[]
Laura was last seen in Aberdeen, Washington, at around 4 PM on February 21, 1969. She was going to collect a new couch and some children's clothing, which Barb Askea, a member of the family who wanted to adopt her son, had agreed to give her on the condition that she come to pick them up that day. She was last seen leaving home in her roommate's red 1967 Ford Rancho, driving on Country Road 101 toward Moclips, Washington.
Laura's roommate, who may also have been her boyfriend, advised her not to get the couch and clothes alone. During the custody battle, she had got into altercations with Barb on at least two occasions. However, her roommate could not accompany her and neither could two other friends she asked, so Laura decided to go alone.
On February 23, Laura's brown leather wallet was discovered abandoned on a sidewalk in Hoquiam, Washington. Police mailed it back to Laura's post box, but she never collected it. The vehicle she had been driving was found on February 24 outside a Tavern in 700 Block, J Street in Hoquiam, Washington.
While Barb initially denied that Laura had ever arrived in Moclips, she eventually admitted that this was not the case in 2006. While being interviewed by police over the phone, she said Laura had come to pick up the clothes and couch and then went to the Moclips Tavern for drinks afterwards. The interview ended because Barb was in poor health and was too ill to continue. Authorities believe that Barb murdered Laura, although they do not think she acted alone. Barb died in 2008 without ever admitting to having any involvement in Laura's disappearance.
