Kristy Jean Rogers was a teenager who disappeared from Florida in 1997. Her photo is shown age-progressed to 35 years.
Case[]
On August 1, 1997, Kristy told her family that she was going to spend the night at a female friend's home. Instead, she stayed with her boyfriend, William Cawthon. Cawthon stated that Kristy left his home around 5:00 a.m. on August 2. Kristy's home was less than a mile away, but she never arrived. She had a kidney infection at the time of her disappearance and did not have her kidney medication with her.
A bag of clothes was found in the woods behind the Crestview Plaza Shopping Center in February 1998. The bag was not hidden and contained a shirt, shorties, bra, underwear, socks, makeup, and keys. All items were identified as Kristy's. The area had already been extensively searched, so authorities believed the bag had been left there recently. Additionally, the clothing appeared more weathered than the bag.
Unidentified remains found in Boyton Beach, Florida on May 23, 1999, were misidentified as Kristy's based on dental records in January 2001. By the time the error was corrected a week later, Kristy's family had already made funeral arrangements but had not buried the remains, which are still unidentified.
Investigators initially believe that Kristy had run away however they now believe she was a victim of foul play. Specifically, they theorize she was abducted by someone known to her. Kristy's mother described her as trusting and naïve. Her family, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend's family are not considered suspects.
