Not to be confused with James Cary Smith
James F. Smith was a Private First Class United States Army soldier of the Quartermaster Corps who went missing in action in Anglo-Egypt Sudan, now modern-day Sudan. A resident of Dallas County, Texas, he is the only United States Soldier who remains missing in Sudan.
Smith was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing North Africa American Cemetery Carthage, Tunisia. He is among the 72,000 Americans unaccounted for during World War II.
