Haleigh Cummings was a child who disappeared in 2009. Her case is classified as a homicide, although her body was never recovered.
Background
Medical conditions
Haleigh Cummings was born with a genetic disorder known as Turner Syndrome. It is caused when a female is born with only one X chromosome, and is also known as monosomy X. Turner syndrome can exhibit numerous symptoms including the restricted growth of the long bones and ovaries, cardiac problems, vision problems, specific learning disabilities, multiple birth marks, swollen fingers and toes, and hypothyroidism.
Because of her disability, Cummings requires hormone treatments and visits her cardiologist regularly. She may be in need of medical attention.
Early life
Haleigh Anne-Marie Cummings was born on August 17, 2003 to parents Ronald Lemyles Cummings and Crystal Sheffield. Her parents, who had never married, separated several years before she vanished and fought over her and her brother in court. Her father was given full custody of both children in 2005 as Sheffield had admitted to using cocaine and Haleigh had missed several medical appointments while in her mother's care.
Cummings' father had several run-ins with the law, mainly drug arrests, prior to her disappearance. However, in most cases the charges were dropped or he got deferred adjudication. During the custody battle for Cummings and her brother, Sheffield had alleged that Ronald Cummings was violent. She had also once tried to take out a protective order against him but the case was dismissed.
Cummings lived with her father, his girlfriend, Misty Janette Croslin, and her younger brother in their family trailer; however, she did still get to visit her mother every other weekend. Croslin had been living with the family for five months when Cummings disappeared.
Cummings was attending Browning Pearce Elementary school in San Mateo, Florida at the time of her disappearance. Her favourite food was macaroni and cheese and she enjoyed playing with makeup and her laptop.
Case
Haleigh was last seen sleeping in her family's trailer when she went to bed at 8:00 p.m. on February 9, 2009 where her little brother was sleeping as well. Her father, Ronald's live-in girlfriend, Misty Croslin went to bed at 10:00 p.m. in the same room as the kids.
Ronald came home from work a second work shift sometime after 3:00 a.m. where Misty told him that she discovered Haleigh missing from her bed. Although Ronald and Misty insist that the trailer was broken into, the police found no signs of forced entry to the trailer.
Misty was repeatedly questioned by the police about Haleigh's disappearance and were skeptical of her story, stating that she had changed it multiple times. Misty and her older brother, Tommy accused Joe Overstreet of kidnapping Haleigh, but he denies any involvement nor has he been charged in connection of her disappearance.
In January of 2010, Misty, Ronald and Tommy were arrested on unrelated drug trafficking charges along with Ronald's cousin and a friend. Haleigh has never been located and her case is classified as a homicide.
