Eileen Jacqueline[1] Stewart was a woman who was last seen by a friend traveling from Mount Nelson, Tasmania, Australia on a bus to Hobart on 7 November 1958. A 2006 inquest found that Eileen had most likely died either on or the following days after 7 November.
Case[]
On the morning of Friday, 7 November 1958, Eileen left her home in Mount Nelson to go to her husband's work at a signal station in Mount Nelson to say goodbye to him as she was 'going to town to do some shopping'. She was last sighted by a friend travelling on the 10:30 a.m. bus from Mount Nelson to Hobart. They parted ways in Hobart to go shopping.
Eileen's husband had expected her to return to their home in Mount Nelson on the 1:00 p.m. bus. By 4:00 p.m., after Eileen had failed to return, her husband placed their children temporarily in orphanages and reported to police that Eileen was missing. It was suggested in the original police file that Eileen suffered from an unspecified nervous disorder and that there were concerns for her safety. Eileen's mother believed that Eileen had deliberately left her husband because of his treatment of her and that he may be exaggerating Eileen's nervous condition to bring more police to get her back.
Eileen was born in the United Kingdom and married her husband at the age of 16, who was 15 years her senior. They had four children together and arrived in Tasmania, Australia, from the United Kingdom in March 1958 as assisted migrants.
Eileen's sister in New Zealand stated that her last contact was a letter from Eileen's husband in April 1958 stating that they had arrived in Australia and that Eileen was very happy. On 6 October 1960, Eileen's husband departed on a ship from Melbourne with his children to return to the United Kingdom. Before he left the country, he had advised Tasmania Police of his intention to return to the United Kingdom and gave them his address upon his arrival there.
A 2006 inquest found that Eileen had most likely died either on or the following days after 7 November 1958 in Tasmania but was unable to determine her cause of death.
