Diana Leigh Avera was a young woman who was last seen in Mount Vernon, Alabama in August 1982.
Case[]
On May 21, 1982, Diana was arrested for disorderly conduct and was involuntarily committed to Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was the subject of electroconvulsive treatments and numerous other therapies during her time at the hospital. When her family visited her, they described her as being "like a zombie" and barely able to speak or walk.
In August 1982, Diana escaped from the hospital. Her family reported that the hospital and police in the area told them they were trying to list her as a missing person and investigate her disappearance but later they found out that this wasn't true and so Diana wasn't listed as a missing person until 2020.
