David Ezell Blockett was an infant who was abducted by a woman posing as a social worker in 1980. His photo is shown age progressed to age 39.
Case[]
David vanished from his home in Newport News on December 11, 1980. That day, a woman showed up at his home and introduced herself to his mother, Vanessa, as Marie Kelly. She said she was a social worker, and the Department of Social Services was sponsoring a function for children at Riverside Regional Medical Center. After further discussion, Vanessa agreed to let Marie take David and his two-year-old brother, Fredrick, to the gathering. David never returned home.
Frederick was found wandering near Old Mallory Road in Hampton later that day. Someone had placed a piece of paper with his name and address in his pocket. As an adult, Frederick would recall that they were taken in a car driven by an unidentified man.
Later that day, a woman thought to be Marie called Vanessa and asked about what kind of formula David had taken. However, the call ended before it could be traced.
It soon became apparent that the Department of Social Services was not employing any women named Marie, and there was no party at the Riverside Regional Medical Center. However, another mother had experienced a similar incident, with a woman posing as a social worker several days beforehand. The mother told the woman to go away and did not let her take her baby. Marie may have found David through a local newspaper containing a list of recent births.
Composite sketch of Marie Kelly
"Marie Kelly" was an African-American woman, believed to be between 32 and 35 years old. She had a heavy build, large hips and a medium complexion. She was about 5'4 to 5'8 tall and weighed around 145 to 155 pounds. A composite sketch of her has been created.
Two of David's nephews were abducted in 2011. They were later found alive, and the woman who took them was determined to have been mentally ill. She was not known to the family before kidnapping the young boys.
Authorities hope DNA evidence can be used to identify David's abductor. Several days after David's disappearance, a diaper bag and a leather folder were found near a parkway in Yorktown, Virginia. These items were believed to belong to Marie Kelly and contained some of David's shoes and his blanket.
