Case[]
The body of Cherie's mother, Elizabeth "Sissy" Vasser, was found in the Mississippi River in February 1987. She remained unidentified for seven years until family members reported that Elizabeth and Cherie hadn't been seen since December 1986, and the connection was made. This was when detectives started investigating Cherie's case.
Cherie's stepfather, Larry Vasser, told police that he had sent Cherie to be looked after by other people in Kansas City and that she was living under another name.
