Rosario Teresa "Chary" Gonzalez was a young woman who was last seen in Miami, Florida on February 26, 1984. She is believed to be an early victim, if not the first, victim during Australian-American Christopher Wilder’s 1984 killing spree.

Background[]

Chary was born in 1963 in Cuba. In 1973, she and her family moved to Massachusetts and in 1979 they moved to Miami, Florida. She was engaged at the time and was an aspiring model. She had competed in the Miss Florida beauty contest.

Case[]

Chary was last seen at the Miami Grand Prix racetrack. She was working a temporary job giving out samples of aspirin for a pharmaceutical company. She was last seen leaving the area with a white man in his thirties, identified as Christopher Wilder. Her car was later found parked near Dupont Plaza.

Chary was expected to be home between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and would also call her family to notify them if she was going to be late home. She lived with her parents in Homestead, Florida.

In March 1984, Christopher Wilder became a suspect in her disappearance after he was connected to another missing girl, 23-year-old Beth Kenyon who was last seen on March 5, 1984. Chary and Beth had both competed in the Miss Florida beauty contest.

Wilder has been considered a possible suspect in numerous disappearances, including Mary Opitz and Tammy Leppert. He is also a possible suspect in the murder of 18-year-old Mary Hare, who disappeared in similar circumstances to Mary Opitz and other victims of Wilder.

Chary is the first known victim of Wilder (within the United States). Days after Gonzales disappeared, Wilder began a spree of sexual assaults and murders across the country; preferring teenage and young adult females. After being cornered by authorities I in New Hampshire, he shot himself and died at the scene.

Prior to his arrival in the United States, Wilder had a history of sexual assaults, and is theorized to have potentially committed murders in Australia. One such crime is the high-profile and unsolved Wanda Beach murders, consisting of two teenage girls killed in 1975.
