Carolyn Elizabeth "Carrie" Lawson was a young woman who was last seen in Jasper, Alabama, on September 11, 1991. A woman was convicted of a role in her abduction, and another man killed himself before he could be charged.

Background[]

Carrie was from Tennessee and graduated from college in Alabama just before her disappearance. She then got a job at a law firm in Jasper.

Case[]

Early in the morning, Carrie received a call from a woman claiming to be a nurse. She said that a family member had been seriously injured, so Carrie and her husband ran out the door to get there, but instead, they met a masked assailant at the door.

The attacker, armed with a gun, forced Carrie to tie up her husband, and then the attacker forced Carrie into their car and drove away. The car was later found in the woods in Winston County, Alabama.

Carrie's husband received a call demanding a $300,000 ransom the next morning. Her loved ones dropped the money in a black culvert. The money was collected on September 13, but Carrie was never released.

A woman later confessed to having a role in her kidnapping. She said a man she was working with was the person who abducted Carrie and that she was just an accomplice. She said she last saw Carrie a day or two after the abduction, and later, the man she was working with said she had escaped and ran away into the woods.

Most of the money was later found in the man's attic. When police were staking out his house, he killed himself. The woman he was working with was later charged with her role in the abduction. Carrie was declared legally dead in 1993. Many investigators believe that Carrie's remains are buried in an abandoned coal mine.
