International Missing Persons Wiki

Carla Kaylene Owens was a teenager who vanished in 1981.

Case[]

Carla was last seen in Clearwater, Washington on July 1, 1981. On June 30, 1981 Carla, who lived in west Jefferson County with her family, left to start a babysitting job she'd taken about 10 miles away in a trailer in Clearwater. She planned to stay there until the fourth of July. She was driven up by Kenneth Barry, a transient logger, although the woman who's baby she would be minding also accompanied her.

On July 2, 1981 the mother of the child Carla was supposed to be watching returned to find her baby, who appeared not to have been cared for, sleeping on the sofa alone. There were large bloodstains on the living room floor and pieces of a smashed, blood-spattered Galliano bottle where found. However, the wasn't actually enough blood to suggest that someone had suffered a serious or fatal injury. When police searched Barry's pickup truck more bloodstains and pieces of a smashed Galliano bottle were found in it.

The blood found at the home and in Barry's truck was confirmed to be Carla's type but DNA testing which could have conclusively proven if it belonged to her was unavailable at the time. Since her disappearance the blood samples her parents provided have been lost so they can not be conducted today. Barry died in the late 1980s without ever being charged in Carla's case, which remains unsolved.
