Rebecca "Becky" Abbot Doisy was a woman who vanished in 1976. A man has been convicted for her murder, but her body has never been found.
Background[]
Becky had completed three years of a bachelor's degree at the University of Missouri before deciding to drop out and begin working instead. Her family described her as a sensitive and independent woman. She had an active social life and enjoyed writing fiction.
Case[]
Becky was last seen after leaving her apartment in the 400 block of Price Avenue in Columbia, Missouri, on August 5, 1979. She was last seen with a man called Johnny Wright; her colleagues later recalled that he would often dine at the restaurant she worked at and frequently ask her to date him. Becky eventually agreed to this. The two went for a drink at a local tavern the day she disappeared. Becky had left her apartment door unlocked and her cat alone that day. She has not been seen or heard from since her disappearance.
Wright vanished several days after Becky's disappearance before reappearing in St. Louis, Missouri. He had a record of committing violent crimes such as rape and assault, and police believed that he was responsible for at least four rapes in the area. He was interviewed about his involvement in Becky's case and failed a lie detector test.
In 1985, a warrant was issued for Wright to be arrested for second-degree murder in Becky's case after a former roommate of Wright's, Tommy Moore, claimed that Wright had shown him Becky's body in the trunk of his car. Despite this, Wright could not be located until 2009, when he asked police to perform a criminal background check on him so that he could apply for a job. Wright was charged with Becky's murder in 2010 and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Despite this, Becky's body has never been found. Wright died of natural causes in 2015.
