Averie Grace Evans was a girl who was last seen in Natchitoches, Louisiana on November 5, 1990. A man was convicted in her case, but has since been released on parole.
Case[]
Averie was last seen selling candy door-to-door. She had just visited a friend and was on her way home. She was selling candy for her schools fundraiser. She had her bicycle at the time, which disappeared with her.
One of Averie's neighbors, Phillip Louise DeSalle, become a suspect early on in the investigation, however police didn’t have any evidence against him until January 1991, when he sent an anonymous letter to them where he claimed to have strangled Averie. The letter also claimed that Averie’s body was dumped in a trash bin and her bicycle put in Sibley Lake. At the end of the letter, he apologized for what he did. Police found Averie's bicycle in Sibley Lake, where her neighbor claimed it would be, but her remains were not found despite the searching of a landfill.
When Phillip was identified as the author of the letter, he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists. He survived the attempt and was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He pled guilty to manslaughter and aggravated kidnapping. Prosecutors agreed to the plea bargain for fear they couldn't prove a case of premeditated murder without Averie's body. Phillip was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He was released from prison in January 2015, but will be on parole until 2040 and is a registered sex offender.
