Ashley LaShay Jones was a child who went missing in 1996. Her aunt was convicted of her murder, yet her body was never found.
Case[]
Ashley was last seen at home in the care of her mother's sister, Joyce. That morning, her mother and stepfather left for work, and her 12-year-old half-sister, Erica, went to school.
At approximately 9:15 a.m., Ashley's mother, Vicky, called home to check on Ashley and Joyce and was told everything was okay. Vicky thought she heard Ashley playing in the background, making it the last time anyone heard from the child.
When Erica returned home from school, she noticed that Joyce was under the influence of alcohol and was told that Ashley had been picked up by somebody earlier in the day; she assumed that it was Ashley's regular babysitter. Joyce took Erica out of the home and drove while intoxicated, refusing to allow Erica to contact her parents.
After spending the night in a hotel, Joyce and Erica visited a laundromat before Joyce drove Erica back to her home. At that point, reports of missing children were filed by their parents.
Joyce was arrested for kidnapping Erica and was charged with murder when blood stains matching Ashley's DNA were found in the trunk of her car. She was convicted of second-degree murder and remains in prison. Ashley's body has never been found.
